Polyphosphoric acid (PPA), also known as multiple phosphoric acid, is a mixture of phosphoric acids with different degrees of polymerization. Its chemical definition has a general molecular formula Hn+2PnO3n+1, with the representative formula H6P4O13 and CAS No. 8017-16-1. Polyphosphoric acid refers to phosphoric acids with a P2O5 content of 68%-85%, and its composition lies between orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) and metaphosphoric acid (HPO3). PPA starts from pyrophosphoric acid (H4P2O7), followed by tripolyphosphoric acid (H5P3O10), tetrapolyphosphoric acid (H6P4O13), and so on, with the ratio of acid anhydride (P2O5) to water in the acid gradually increasing.
In terms of physical properties, polyphosphoric acid is a colorless, transparent, viscous liquid at room temperature, readily hygroscopic, with a density of about 2.06 g/cm³ (25°C), a boiling point of 856°C, and a melting point range of -21°C to 50°C (varying with the degree of polymerization). At low temperatures it takes on a hard, glassy state, and shows fluidity when heated to 50-60°C. PPA is miscible with water and hydrolyzes into orthophosphoric acid; the dissolution process is exothermic, so dilution should be carried out in an ice bath. It is insoluble in non-polar solvents, but its solubility can be improved through polyphosphate esters (PPE) to enhance compatibility with organic solvents. PPA is highly viscous and difficult to stir and pour at room temperature, but is easy to handle above 60°C.
In terms of chemical properties, polyphosphoric acid is a protic acid; its acidity is weaker than nitric acid and sulfuric acid but stronger than phosphoric acid, and it can donate protons to participate in reactions. It has strong dehydrating and strongly corrosive properties, and is classified as a Class II inorganic acidic corrosive substance, with extremely strong corrosive effects on skin, eyes and mucous membranes, which can cause severe burns. Its dehydrating ability is comparable to that of sulfonic acid, but it has weaker oxidizing properties and generally does not oxidize reactants. The molecule contains multiple phosphorus-oxygen bonds and is highly chemically active, participating in condensation, esterification, alkylation and other reactions; contact with foaming agents may trigger combustion. PPA is readily deliquescent and must be stored in sealed containers, away from water and moisture.
